Jailbroken iPhones exposed to second worm, this time malicious

The media seems to be lapping up this latest iPhone 'threat'. Only the 'Tech' media seems to be making it clear, in their headlines at least, that it only effects Jailbroken  (user modified) iPhone and iPod Touch's. The fix?

Either turn off SSH, change the default password or don't jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch. If you've already jailbroken your device and don't want the risk of being hacked, a simple iTunes 'restore' should return it to it's Apple approved factory defaults.

Google Chrome OS

Gizmodo has a pretty good summary of what Google Chrome is.

One comment that stood out for me was this - "You'll have to buy a Chrome OS device: You might be able to hack this thing onto your current machine, but you won't just be able to install it to replace Windows, or opt for it on your next laptop, for example. You'll have to buy hardware that Google approved and consulted on."

One of the previous assumptions of Chrome OS was the ability to take an old Windows laptop and install Chrome OS on it instead. Giving the hardware a new lease of life. Seems Google's taking Apple's approach of controlling the software and hardware integration, which seems to work very well for Apple.

Apple posts urgent update for Apple TV 3.0

Didn't see this problem myself, but the update's painless enough.

If you've installed the Apple TV 3.0 software update, you should immediately update to version 3.0.1. This prevents content from temporarily disappearing until it is resynced.

To update your Apple TV software:

1. Reboot your Apple TV (unplug the power cord and plug it back in)
2. Select Settings > General from the main menu
3. Select Update Software
4. Select Download and Install

Note: Your Apple TV will conduct a restart, which is followed by the Apple logo and a status bar.

Apple killing support for Atom Netbook Processor?

Seems the next update for Snow Leopard may end support for Intel's
Atom processor, which is commonly used inside Windows and Linux based
Netbooks, but no Apple hardware at this time.

The Dell Mini 10v Netbook is said to be one of the better Netbooks and
incredibly easy to install Leopard or Snow Leopard onto, essentially
resulting in a Mini Macbook.

I've been considering a Dell Mini 10v hackintosh myself, but everytime
I try netbooks, with their small screens and cramped keyboard, I can't
think of anything I wouldn't just use my iPod Touch for (e.g. email,
contacts, calendar, reading RSS news feeds, web browsing).

Considering I carry my iPod Touch everywhere these days for my music
listening needs, a Netbook probably isn't a worthy investment, for me
at least.

Motorola DROID review

Can't help think how much thinner and lighter this device could be
without the nasty looking pull out keyboard. Finally, some decent
competition for the iPhone. Competition's good.

Apple TV 3.0 Update Photo Gallery

Apple updated the Apple TV this afternoon. It's quite different to the
earlier layouts, not that nice looking to begin with, but it's growing
on me.

It's interesting how there's a new 'Internet' category, currently listing
the existing YouTube player and a new Internet Radio feature. Plenty
of room for more Internet features, I wonder what's coming coming down
the line?

Local News - Digerati Computing (Nelson's Authorised Apple Dealer)

"Nelson – Computer wizard Mike DeJong owns Digerati Computing, which is the West Kootenay's only authorised Apple Dealership. He runs his business with marketing man and muso Ben Midwicki and together they keep Nelson's Macs in good working order"

"You can find Mike and Ben at DIGERATI COMPUTING at 508G Latimer Street, Nelson (Nelson Brewing Company Building), and phone: (250) 354-0588."

UK ISP in file-sharing wi-fi hack

"In order to illustrate the point, a security expert from TalkTalk visited an ordinary street in Stanmore, Middlesex. Within a couple of hours he had identified 23 wireless connections on residential street The Highway, which were unsecured."

Anyone with an iPod Touch will know there's unsecured wifi in the area, by the number of emails they receive as they walk down the street.

So long as ISPs insist on shipping wireless enabled gateways to their broadband customers without the security enabled, it's a little unfair to cut them off when some punk file-shares on their connection.
